Tuesday was a great night for North Carolina Democrats! Not only did we likely pick up 10 seats in the NC House and 6 seats in the NC Senate (one Dem-leaning seat in each chamber remains too close for a final call as provisional ballots are still being counted), but a number of candidates significantly overperformed expectations, giving us a clear path to breaking the majority in 2020. The Republican majority in both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly has led to policies that don’t reflect the priorities of most North Carolinians, regardless of party. We must return to a legislature that truly represents the people, where votes matter and there are no "safe seats."
On November 6th, we broke the Republican supermajority in both chambers of the NCGA, restoring Governor Cooper’s veto. The next step is to flip one chamber from Republican majority to Democratic majority in 2020 so Democrats have a seat at the table to demand fair maps before new maps are drawn in 2021 following the 2020 Census.
